Presentation Overview

In tough, unpredictable and volatile environments, sustaining performance and the economic bottom line can be the greatest challenge. When the stresses of these situations impact on a company, very often the first – and not immediately obvious – casualties are leadership styles, sustaining team performance and health, and individuals’ perceptions of their value to their company. If these elements break down, the overall performance and thus the economic bottom line, will suffer. Companies which maintain their performance in these areas (like expeditions) have a vastly increased opportunity for success. When stress and uncertainty are present on a daily basis, it is vitally important to sustain the health of leaders, teams, and individuals. This is your culture – and these are your keys to success.

  • Keys to success in a volatile, unpredictable and adverse environment
  • Great leadership styles – the vital link
  • Great teams – understanding their dynamics and sustaining performance
  • Your corporate culture – the strength within
  • Empathetic leadership – empowering individuals and teams
  • Identifying risk and avoiding failure – confronting the brutal facts
  • Where to from here – adapting your plan
  • Success in a hostile environment – riding out the perfect storm, and winning
  • Mistrust and conflict – the great team destructors
  • Cross cultural teams, and understanding preferred work styles

LEADING A HIGH PERFORMANCE CROSS CULTURAL TEAM

In this presentation, Paula explains the techniques and processes required to effectively lead a cross cultural team – through even the toughest of physical conditions. Specifically targeted toward companies looking to either enter a global marketplace or to maximize effectiveness in an existing operation, Paula addresses the crucial issues of planning for success, and conflict resolution, within the parameters of a cross cultural environment. She draws direct parallels between her expedition experiences and the corporate environment, illustrating her message with examples learned through hiring and working with over ten different nomadic guides, walking through varying regions and encountering ever changing dialects, customs, and geographical conditions. Paula uses her expedition to highlight the strategies that work both in an expedition environment and a corporate sphere to ensure the highest rate of success and performance. She also offers valuable insight into developing the communication techniques necessary for effective performance in cultures outside of your own.

ONE WOMAN WALKING:

THE HIGH PERFORMANCE WOMAN

Specifically aimed at female audiences, in this presentation Paula draws parallels between her expedition experiences and a corporate environment, focusing on the specific challenges women face in sustaining high performance in both arenas. Based around her experiences of hiring (and occasionally firing) local male, nomadic, Islamic guides from a culture entirely different to her own, and living with them in isolated circumstances over extended periods, Paula explores the techniques required to ensure effective conflict resolution, crisis management, and amicable communication, in a strictly male dominated environment. Dealing with issues of self esteem, calm assertion, physical stamina and role stereotyping, in this informative, humorous, and sometimes touching presentation Paula details the inner processes she went through as she walked over 7000km through both highly challenging and at times downright dangerous territory – and shows how the strategies she applied correlate to a modern working environment. Sponsored by the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, Paula’s walk has always been about an ordinary woman doing something extraordinary. This presentation follows that theme and both inspires and informs, creating a warm and exciting experience for women of all ages.

OUTCOMES

· Understand how to effectively lead a male team

· Learn why humor is vital, not optional

· Gain communication skills that work in a male dominated environment

· Develop the ability to be calmly and rationally assertive in threatening or crisis situations

· Hone your conflict resolution skills

· Identify your own operating style, possible tension areas, and develop a personal action strategy to bridge the two

PATH TO A GOAL – IDENTIFYING AND CROSSING YOUR OWN DESERT

With her background in teaching, Paula aims this presentation at the secondary school audience. In it Paula explores the factors that led her to pursue her current adventurous course, and looks at the practical course she followed in arriving at her desired goal – and why she has succeeded in achieving her dreams. Taking a behind the scenes look at how finance works in adventuring, and the process of research and planning so essential to achieving success in the field, Paula draws parallels between the learning process she went through in preparing and executing the walk, and decisions that students are faced with at the career choice level of schooling. Exploring the often bewildering process of career choice, Paula highlights the importance of identifying one’s own core values and areas of true interest, and setting goals that marry with both. She then draws on her experiences in the desert to show how to maintain the courage, focus, and determination needed to arrive at the successful completion of a set goal.

*nb: this presentation can easily be extended into a half day workshop enabling students to explore their own career options and set individual goals.

OUTCOMES

· Understand why we all have different goals

· Identify your own core values and why your adventure will be an individual one

· Realise that “why” is not a question you need to answer

· Develop your ability to clearly recognise paths that can work for you

· Improve your ability to maintain focus on a set goal until its conclusion

· Understand why success does not come overnight – but learn how to plan to ensure that it does come.
